FURNACE ARCHAEOLOGY

2005 EXCAVATION

Two excavations by Heritage Research Associates of Eugene, Oregon have explored the foundation of the Oswego Iron Furnace. The first excavation took place in the summer of 2005 during renovations to George Rogers Park. A concrete reflecting pool dating from the 1950s was removed from the area in front of the furnace, providing archaeologists with an opportunity to examine that area.

In June 2005 archaeologists from Heritage Research Associates uncovered a mysterious structure in front of the furnace.

2006 EXCAVATION

The excavation in the fall of 2006 was a preliminary step in the City's furnace stabilization project. Its goal was to give the consulting engineer information about the furnace foundation. Two trenches, each one meter wide, were dug through the east and south arches and exposed one quarter of the hearth. Shading in the diagram indicates the excavated areas. The trench in the south arch stopped at the edge of the 2005 excavation.

Senior Archaeologist Rick Minor and Julie Ricks screen soil removed by Bob Wenger from the trench in the east arch.

The following article from the Fall 2006 issue of the Oswego Heritage Journal gives more information about this excavation.
