FURNACE ARCHAEOLOGY

2006 EXCAVATION

Two large flat bricks project from the top of the forehearth, the 19th century ground level. A moveable iron trough probably fitted into the notch to the left of these bricks. When the furnace was tapped, molten iron ran down the trough to the casting floor. A deposit of spilled iron bulges from the trench wall in front of the notch.
